About Us

We are a diverse group of students representing many different faculties, countries, and backgrounds. One thing we all have in common is a passion for improving mental health.

The program helps students learn about mental wellness and safe substance use patterns; corrects misperceptions about substance use norms; and promotes student – driven and led activities to raise awareness of the importance of early identification and intervention. Opportunities for active engagement and dialogue are a central component.

Man-Up is a local chapter of the Caring Campus project to raise awareness about men’s mental health and to support related initiatives.

Punit bhatt
Hey! My name is Punit Bhatt, I am a second year Neuroscience student at the U of C and am the VP External for Man-Up for Mental Health this year. It is my second year with the club and I am excited to see what this year has in store for us! I think that mental health advocacy is extremely important in a campus setting, and on top of that advocacy for men’s mental health is especially important. There is quite a big stigma surrounding men’s mental health, it is a topic that is taboo among many societies, and it is one of the major aims of the club to ensure that conversation around mental health is promoted and that all people are encouraged to open up. I think that through events such as Lift-Off, Casino Royale, Arcade Night, and Managing Mental health 101 the club has been able to make significant strides towards creating a safe, healthy, and open community on campus when it comes to men’s mental health.

My name is Michael Phan and I am a third year Sociology student at the University of Calgary while also being the VP internal for the Man-Up for Mental Health club here at the university! I believe the exposure of the issue surrounding men’s mental health is positive for the community and allows men to relieve their emotional pain without shame. Continuing to help with the movement, I am in my second year in this club and am looking forward to what the future brings in these difficult times. It may be a time where we all do not see eachother at the university, but I am always willing to talk online or even play some video games! I always love to meet new people so if you hop in to some of our events, come say hi!

Hey! I’m Andrew and I am Executive Director for ManUp for Mental Health. I am in my third year of psychology. My passion is advocating for the destigmatization of mental health which is why I joined ManUp for Mental Health. This year during the global pandemic, it is my goal to contribute to a sense of belonging within our community because supportive social networks are more important than ever before. When I have the time I love playing paintball. I’m also an avid reader and shameless Harry Potter fan (not so much of the author though...). I’m excited for another amazing year and the opportunity to meet new people!

Nancy
Hello everyone! I'm Nancy, the VP of Marketing for Man-Up Mental Health. I am a third year Zoology student, and am a strong advocate of destigmatizing mental health. I believe that it is so important to raise awareness surrounding mental health in a variety of environments and situations. As a person who grew up in the Asian community, and as female in the STEM field, it is hard to ignore the ignorance (whether it is intentional or unintentional) regarding inequalities faced among the different groups of people. Racial injustices continue for decades, where reformations are slow to come. Females face great inequalities in the work field. And in some societies (even our own), men are not usually given the opportunity to openly speak about their mental well-being. Together at Man-up mental health, we strive to create an environment where men, a vulnerable target of stigmatization, can feel safe and speak about their experiences. I want to be a part of the change where we can all speak freely and comfortably about what we need to live happy and fulfilling lives. If you are comfortable, speaking about your story is the beginning of connection and mutual understanding, so if you see me or our team in the halls (or online), feel free to say hi, and let's start the conversation!

I’m one of the Jr. Executives of Communication for Man Up for Mental Health and I’m excited to join this club’s battle towards the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Tatsuya hansen
Hey! My name is Tatsuya Hansen, and I am a part of the Man-up for Mental Health's team as a Junior Executive of External Affairs. I am a first-year student at the University of Calgary, in the Neuroscience program. As it is my first year with the club, I hope to work with all the other team members to raise awareness for mental health and hopefully make the U of C community a more positive, engaging and safe space. I am excited to tackle this silent crisis and redefine the phrase "Man-up" through our many events and promotions. There is a lot of stigma surrounding men's mental health, especially since there is a gender barrier when reaching out for support, so I hope to promote a healthy perception of support for men and women equally. Lastly, physical and mental health should always be everyone's priority!

Hello everyone! I’m Gautam and I’m a second year Biological Sciences student. I enjoy playing soccer, video games and netflix in my free time. I am a part of Man-up for Mental Health as a Jr. Executive of communications. It is my first year with this club and I hope to work closely with the team to further increase awareness surrounding men’s mental health. This is an issue that is very prevalent in our society but is rarely talked about, which causes far more problems and prevents individuals from finding solutions. A goal throughout this year will be to destigmatize conversations around mental health in the UofC community and especially uncover how the pandemic has affected students. I am looking forward to working on events such as Lift-Off and Casino Royale in the future and forming long lasting connections with club members.

I am a first year business student majoring in accounting with a data science minor. During my free time, I enjoy reading, listening to music and watching anime. My motivation for joining Manup is to help people in university feel comfortable speaking about mental health and reaching out for help. I believe that building connections and having a support system is important so individuals do not feel alone during difficult times. No one deserves to struggle with mental health alone. I look forward to working with the club and all our amazing events this year.

Amanda mcconnachie
Hi! My name is Amanda McConnachie and I am a first year student in the neuroscience program. I am a member of ManUp for Mental Health as a Jr. Executive of marketing. When not busy studying (which is a lot of the time) you can probably find me skiing, hiking, baking, or watching Netflix. Mental health advocacy and destigmaization is something that I am extremely passionate about as it has affected myself and many of the people close to me. I know how difficult it can be to reach out and tell someone you’re struggling. As a part of ManUp I know we can make a difference in many individuals' lives by helping people know they are not alone and where and how they can find help. Being stuck online is definitely not easy, if you ever need anyone to reach out to or just want to chat, feel free to reach out. I love making new friends and am always here for anything you need!

Sophia tran
Hi all! My name is Sophia Tran and I am one of the Co-Presidents of Man-Up for Mental Health! This year, I’m entering my third year of my BSc in Psychology at the University of Calgary. As I enter my third year with Man-Up, my desire to bring awareness to mental health concerns and end the stigma of talking about mental health continues to grow. It is especially important to note that gender should not be a barrier for those seeking professional help or support––you deserve to get the help you need. In my free time, you can catch me chasing sunsets with my camera, trying new baking recipes, or attempting to paint. It can be daunting meeting new people and making friends, so feel free to reach out online or in-person (when it is safe of course!).

Rayyan Farooq
Hello! I’m Rayyan Farooq, I am a third year Kinesiology student at the University of Calgary and I am the VP Events for Man-Up for Mental Health. University is a stressful time for most students and I wanted to make sure people are aware of the resources available to them if they need help. Men have to deal with their stresses and think they seem weak if they ask for help. It is the goal of me and our club to advocate against the stigmatization of men’s mental health and create an open conversation. Our events allow people to connect and create a safe community to talk about their mental health. It may seem hard to connect to people in this global pandemic but our online events can still help get a little closer.

Adrian Handy
Hello! My name is Adrian Handy, I am in my fourth and final year of a Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology degree. I am the VP Communications for Man-Up for Mental Health. I joined ManUpYYC because I noticed a mental health disparity in High School students compared to University students. It seemed to me University students fell under increasing pressure to perform and that many students were sacrificing their physical and mental health to cope. I wanted to play a part in the solution, and what I loved about ManUp YYC was their visibility on campus and the attempt to engage with different communities. My favorite event is lift-off, where several bench presses are set up right at the entrance to MacEwan Hall. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and discuss various mental health issues with many different people because of Lift-off, and I know my appreciation for the importance of mental and physical health has grown because of it. I hope these events encourage people to think about their mental health and steps they can take to improve it.

In my free time I love to ski, hike, and watch Netflix. I joined Man-Up because I want to help educate people and provide support to fight against the stigma around men’s mental health. Mental health is important for everyone—gender should not be what stops individuals from getting the help they need and deserve. By helping to educate people and provide support I hope to create an inclusive and supportive environment on campus and in social circles around men’s mental health. As we are online now, I know it’s hard to make connections—if you need someone to talk to or need help finding resources, don’t be afraid to reach out to me!
